Oct. 2007 John Smith Series Race
Moroso Kart Track
This is one of those weekends
we should have stayed home, that's racing though you have to take the good with
the bad. We went to Moroso Sat. to get some practice in for Sunday's race. It's
hard to understand why a track that wants Rotax races to take place at their
track but yet they do not require the spec tire for Rotax to be run. Moroso
requires Vega tires for their local series, the only sprint track in the state
of Florida that does so we have no where else to run them. Learning to set the
kart up to run those tires has nothing to do with learning how to set up the
kart for the Rotax spec tire MOJO's the spec Rotax tire.
It threatened
rain all day Sat. but didn't let lose until after practice was over so we
ducked the bullet in that respect. We decided to redo Cody's seat after
practice, moving it forward. A good lesson for all you reading this seat
placement is everything in kart racing it has to be done correctly. Sometimes
you need to move it to see if you can get the kart to work better. At any rate
it took us until nine o'clock that night to get his seat done and than it was
off to the hotel.
We got to the track Sunday about 8 am and it was
raining slightly the track was wet as hell. You could tell it was blowing over
and it looked to be clearing up. Of all the races we have attended at Moroso
this was the worst run race of them all. They refused to get the track drying
equipment out on the track and where only going allow one five minute practice
session. We didn't go out to practice at Moroso five minutes is five laps, on a
wet track you won't even get the tires warm.
Qualifying: Cody
went out on the wet track first time sense we moved his seat on slicks on a wet
track and qualified third not bad at all.
Prefinal: Cody was
behind the kid who qualified second on the grid when they dropped the green
flag he didn't take off and the other side of the grid screamed away from down
the straight away. Cody ended up out of the first corner in five place and
worked his way to finish third, great considering the horrible start by
P2.
Final: From now on we'll go by what Cody and I have tested
and know and not what others who think they know say. Cody got a much better
start out of the first corner in third place and stayed there up until the
final lap when the fourth place kid finally caught him and passed him. In
watching him go thru the back corners of the track you could see Cody's kart
was tight and just won't come out of the corners. My fault but as a parent your
first reaction is to blame the driver, you need to step back and take a deep
breath sometimes before you open your mouth and remember your there first and
fore most to spend time with your son or daughter. Sometimes I forget that and
I always regret it after words so if you have a son or daughter racing please
keep that in mind and I myself will do a better job in the future of doing so.
We now have a couple weeks off so I'm sending Cody's practice motor to
Donald at Advanced Karting to get rebuilt. The down time will do Cody some good
actually I think as we've been going at it pretty hard the last five weeks.
