WKA Florida
Kart Championship Series March 3rd, 2007
Our day stated
at 4 in the morning driving to Jax 103rd street for the race, Cody's first race
back in Supercan JR this year. It was cold and raining like crazy during the
entire two hour drive from Ocala to Jax 103rd st
It rained all during
practice and finally stopped just before qualifying. Cody was on the grid when
the decision was made to go from rain tires back to race slicks. We had ten
minutes to get back to the pits and put the slicks on.
During
qualifying I don't see anything special, Cody looked slow to me but as it
turned out he had the third fastest time qualifying third out of 15 supercan
jr's. The day was suddenly looking a lot better with his qualifying effort.
The pre final promised to be pretty exciting and it proved to be just
that. About half way into the first lap the second place kart go together with
the first place kart flipping the second place kart. Luckly Johnny (second
place kart) was not hurt but we caught the tail end of the mess and took a DNF
with a bent axle.
I didn't have much hope for the final but Cody kept
saying he could still win it and that he was going to do just that. We changed
the axle in plenty of time to make it to the grid for the final, he started in
11th place because of the DNF. It turned out to be one of the greatest races I
had ever seen Cody drive. He went from 11th to 6th place in the first lap and
by lap ten he took the checker flag in 3rd place hot on the heels of the second
place kart. It was amazing he went out on a mission to he showed just how much
driving skill he has. I will never doubt him again when he puts his race face
on.
