Cody Johnson Racing
WKA Florida State Championship Kart Race Homestead April 2008
Cody Wins at Homestead Karting
Homestead Karting track was the second stop in the WKA Florida Championship 2008 series and Cody after his second place finish in race one of the series sat in second place in the Supercan JR class. One of his goals this year is to win the Florida Karting Championship in Supercan JR so this race was fairly important he come away with a good showing.
Cody has made the switch to Birel karts starting with this race and this would be a great way to start off on Birel R30.
We left home at 2:30 AM and got to Homestead at about 9:30 Friday morning to finish putting the Birel together and get some practice in. The day went well with Cody even on a new kart to him was fastest in all the practice sessions .
Saturday, race day was over cast and after being in the rain all last weekend at the Stars of Karting race we where hoping for a dry track for this race. So much for what we hoped for it rained on and off all morning leaving the track real wet for qualifying.
Qualifying- With used rain tires Cody surprised everyone by securing P1 in the Supercan Jr class. The Birel seemed to handle the wet conditions much better than the Arrow Kart did the week before.
Pre-Final - Cody had a great start and was challenged for the lead only briefly in the last lap but held off the challenge to finish in first place.
Final- The final proved to be a bit of a different sorry with Cody friend John Gula on his bumper every lap passing Cody twice for the lead but Cody was able to pass him right back within a few feet to take the lead once again.
The win is a great way to start off with the R30 Birel. Thanks to Rsya Racing for providing the Birel for Cody to use the rest of 2008.
Next weekend the action moves to Ocala Gran Prix for race #1 and #2 of the North Florida Rotax series.
