Florida
Championship Series Benefit Race Oct. 13th and 14th This race was held at Ocala
Gran Prix to benefit On Track Ministries by the WKA Florida Championship
Series. This was one of the most enjoyable kart racing events we have taken
part in. This would be Cody's first race on a Yamaha KT 100 in over a year. His
motor was built for him by Corey Reeves and Kevin at Switch racing motors, on
very fast motor. This race would be Cody's first step toward racing the WKA
Nationals Supercan Jr class in Jacksonville, Fl. in March of 2006.
Practice Friday Oct. 13th went off fairly well with Cody leading
practice with the fastest times putting everyone on notice for the race
Saturday he would be ready for them. We made enough changes to feel confident
about our set up for race day. With practice over we went to mount his new
tires preparing for the race the next day and stripped one of the bead locks.
We spent the next couple hours that evening trying to fix it without success.
We'd have to switch to different rims which we have no practice on which would
make it interesting come race time.
Race day started out a bit cloud
here in Ocala during the morning hours. While Cody went to the drivers meeting
I went over the kart one last time before he'd go out to qualify, no practice
before hand so we hoped for the best running the rear wheels we had to use.
With track temp's pretty low, no grip we went to the grid with higher than
normal pressure hoping that would help. Cody went out and set the fastest
qualifying time and it looked to be a very good field of 8 Jr Supercans.
We made no changes to the kart for the heat race other than making the
carb. setting's just a little bit leaner to compensate for the raising temp's.
Cody was on pole for the start and got beat to the first corner by one other
kart but by lap 3 he was back in the lead. He won the main by about 6 kart
lengths and things looked real good for a main victory.
The main event
was 18 laps and again Cody started on pole. With the type clutch we where
running it took Cody a bit to get up to speed and he once again got beat to the
first corner this time by two karts. He made quick work of getting back up
front and leading for 15 laps taking the checker flag by about 10 kart lengths.
All in all it turned out to be a great start back in the Super Can Jr class and
sets a great tone for the race in March at Jacksonville. Over the next couple
of months we plan on testing at Jacksonville perfecting our set up for the WKA
National event there.
